? Colour Theory and Design Principles for Fashion

This module is designed to provide the student with the knowledge and skills through practical exercises, lecturers, demonstrations and examples to enable them to identify and apply the basic theories of colour and design elements and principles. Students will have to successfully complete practical exercises and integrated projects in order to complete this module.

? CAD 1 for Fashion Design

This module introduces the student to basic computing skills required for design and presentation that will enrich the students understanding of the different image file types and the common programs available for image editing, illustration, coloring and layout organization.

? Fibres and Textiles

The module provides an extensive coverage of textiles knowledge, starting from the original source of plants to the synthesis of chemicals to produce fibres. It allows the students to analyze the different types of fibres, yarns, construction of fabrics, knitting, weaving, dyeing, printing and many other techniques that are available in the textile industry.

? Marketing Foundation

To provide participants with the basic principles of marketing in the context of fashion retail industry through practical exercises, lectures, demonstrations and case studies. This module is designed to introduce the student to the development of costume throughout the major historical periods and will provide students with the ability to understand and identify the main characteristics of silhouettes, textiles, accessories for each period.

This module provide participants with the knowledge and skills through practical exercises, lectures, demonstrations and examples to enable them to understand the fundamental rules of draping more complex garments; bodices, sleeves and collars on the mannequin or industrial dress form and analyze them.

To provide participants with the knowledge and skills through practical exercises, lectures, demonstrations and examples to enable them to identify the configuration of the female silhouette in relation to the cut of more complex ladies garments. To provide the students with the ability to draft master slopers (blocks) for women’s wear and use them to develop more complex patterns.

This module provide participants with the knowledge and skills through practical exercises, lectures, demonstrations and examples to enable them to identify the various industrial sewing techniques for more complex samples and garments for both men’s and women’s wear.

This module is designed to introduce the student to the development of contemporary fashion beginning with the Baroque Period through to the end of the 19th century and will provide the student with the ability to understand and identify the main characteristics of silhouettes, textiles and accessories for each period.?

Advanced Diploma in Fashion Design

? Academic Research and Communication Skills

This unit covers key aspects of research and communication studies in academic contexts relevant to students of design and marketing. Students engage in collaborative learning activities throughout the term in order to develop their teamwork skills. Students learn to locate, understand and critically evaluate information from books, journals, the Internet and primary sources in order to do effective research. Using these sources of information, students then produce an extended piece of analytical writing and give oral presentations to their peers. Skills in doing primary research (i.e. conducting focus groups and surveys), accessing and evaluating information, paraphrasing, using established referencing systems, applying the principles of effective communication and the professional presentation of documents are all covered during the module.?

Bachelor of Art (HONS) in Fashion Design

(Duration : 1 year)

? Final Collection Stage A: Preparation

This module is designed to encourage the further development and application of knowledge, skills and learning experience from Level 5 and to prepare the student for the environment in which they are to practice. Delivered through studio and workshop based group and individual tutorial sessions the aim is to facilitate the development of a coherent and professionally resolved body of work – from research and sourcing through to 3D product development. Development work should demonstrate creativity, clear development and critical analysis in relation to a fashion collection. The context of the work should relate to the contemporary fashion market. Work will be assessed on its quality and innovation in relation to an individual, agreed proposal.

? Final Collection Stage B: Production

This practical module is designed to conclude the work begun in the final collection Stage A module. Students are encouraged to extend their design and contextual thinking throughout the production process via a negotiated contract, which will determine the outcome of this module. The completed outcome should combine aesthetic resolution with commercial realism through the production of a cohesive collection of work. Assessment is by project.

? Fashion Portfolio

This flatwork module is designed to provide the content and production strategy for module DE0777 Final Collection A: Preparation and DE0778 Final Collection B: Production. It will enable the student to produce a major body of work which will provide substantial evidence of your design abilities. The module draws upon previous learning and experience to enable the generation of research and design development which is both innovative and capable of development through to production. Work should reflect and relate to contemporary and historical fashion practice. ?

? Final Collection Option

This practical module is designed to enable students to contextualise knit fabrics, textiles or pattern cutting within a collection of fashion garments or a range of sampling. The student will be required to undertake a self directed design proposal which clearly defines areas of research, work methods, design intentions and outcomes. The module requires the development of design work with supportive, investigative and innovative sampling or toile making. The outcome, which is individually negotiated, will be assessed on the quality of research, development of sampling cutting techniques and a finished products toile in relation to an identified market. ?

? Design Report

The Design Report is a major written project submitted in the final year of study in the Design programme. The topic is selected by the student on the basis of their programme of Design and will be approved, monitored and supervised by an appropriate tutor. This version should not be longer than 6,000 words, excluding the critical apparatus and other appended materials.
